Govt clears over 1000 CDM projects - Thursday, August 21, 2008 |
The latest clearance given by the government to 15 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects at the meeting of the National Clean Development Mechanism Authority, headed by the Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, has taken the total number of CDM projects approved so far to 1013.

According to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) India's national capital, Delhi is being used as a dumping ground for e-waste. Around 2000 trucks carry e-waste in a clandestine manner and unload it daily in Delhi's scrap yards, mostly at Turkmen Gate, Shastri Park, Luni, Seelampur and Mandoli.

Environmentalists fear the worst. They gathered on Tuesday to warn of the dangers posed to the river Yamuna, the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort by a proposed Rs.1.75 billion landfill project to process solid waste and produce fuel. The project will comprise a compost plant of 350 tonnes daily capacity for converting biodegradable waste into humus like organic fertiliser/soil enricher for use in agriculture.

Spiritual heads from various religious sects and Hindu organisations numbering 250 congregated on Sunday to launch the “Save the Ganga campaign” in Delhi. The objective of the campaign, “Awiral Ganga, Nirmal Ganga: From Gangotri to Ganga Sagar,” is to clean up the river Ganga right from its source in the Himalayas to where it exits into the Bay of Bengal at Ganga Sagar in West Bengal.
